CROWNS
Crowns are used when a large portion of the tooth is compromised past the point of being restorable with a small filling. Instead, a colour matched “cap” is placed over the entire surface of the tooth up to the gumline.
A crown is placed for a number of reasons:
- To support a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining
- To attach a bridge
- To protect weak teeth from fracturing
- To restore fractured teeth
- To cover badly shaped or discoloured teeth
- To cover a dental implant
- As a final restoration after Root Canal Therapy
BRIDGES
Bridges are used to replace missing teeth or teeth that have been extracted. They can be placed on natural teeth as well as dental implants.
Each end of the bridge is a functional crown that supports an artificial tooth suspended in the middle to restore both the function and aesthetics of the missing natural tooth. Bridges also help to preserve natural teeth spacing – as teeth will gradually shit and tilt with age into areas of space in the mouth.
